Summary

Some Magnom units - those for industrial processes which generate kilograms of waste/day - require regular cleaning.  This page covers the necessary procedures.

Notes

Important! Though Magnom™ products are robust and designed to withstand the rigors of the environments for which they are supplied, care must be taken handling this equipment as the magnetic materials can be susceptible to damage from sudden shock or impact. Exposure to very high temperatures and or rapid rates of change of temperature can result in a different expansion of the alloy components in relation to the magnetic materials and can cause damage.

Important! Before undertaking any maintenance on a Magnom™ unit it must be isolated from both the supply and return line and any pressure allowed to safely normalise to atmosphere.  The Magnom™ unit should then be allowed to cool.  When reassembling it is necessary to ensure that all o-rings and joint faces are clean.

The job of the magnetic core assembly is to remove (and retain) unwanted contamination.  The service life of the magnetic core assembly is solely dependant upon the degree of contamination.  Thus in time the magnetic core assembly will become saturated.  It is strongly recommended that a spare Magnom™ unit magnetic core assembly is carried in stock to minimise downtime.

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS - HOW TO CLEAN

The body can be disassembled by unscrewing the two body halves using a spanner.  The magnetic core assembly can then be removed.

Do NOT disassemble the core assembly itself. The cores of Magnom™ products are constructed from powerful magnetic materials and low impedance steel flux plates usually assembled on an alloy or plastic mandrill.

Personal protection during core cleaning is essential.  The end user is responsible for supplying all applicable personal protection for their employees i.e. eye, hand, face and breathing.  FCS has no liabilities. We strongly recommend that eye, oral and nasal protection be used applicable to the environment in which the products are used.

Depending on the environment in which the Magnom™ system has been employed (particularly oil or grease based fluids), cleaning can be made easier if the core is immersed in a suitable solvent prior to the cleaning operation so as to break down any residual fluid within the core, thus leaving only the contaminant to be cleaned. Suitable solvents might include low volatility paraffin type solvents depending on the specific application.

If you do not have an Magnom™ cleaning cabinet for your cleaning operation (usually supplied for Magnom™ process units) and the residual fluid has been drained and removed from the core with the solvent, the most effective way to efficiently clean the core is with an 80 psi air line and blow off gun/nozzle.

The air stream should be directed to blow the contaminant outwards from the center of the core. Alternatively, a bent nozzle can be used to blow the contaminant directly out of the collection zones. This will dislodge the contaminant from its trapped state between the plates. By modulating the air stream between the plates and tracking across the core’s length before revolving the core to expose the next portion of trapped particulate within the plates, the core can be efficiently and effectively cleaned, ready for re installation and re use.

We suggest that a suitable tray or similar be used as means of collecting the particulate blown from the laden core, so as the harvested waste can be disposed of in line with the Health and Safety and Environmental regulations that may apply to the user.

We offers these notes solely as a guideline and accepts no responsibility for the cleaning process, that responsibility lies wholly with the operator and his/her employer.
