Case Study: U.S. Paper Plant
Summary: Installing Magnom protects bearings in critical large scale transmission.
U.S. Paper Plant
Application(s): Transmissions [Large Scale] Lubrication Oils
Industry(s): Transmission Pulp & Paper
Notes
After a top bearing in a large gearbox had overheated a large US paper plant called on Magnom™ to keep the plant running.
The fault had been caused by an oil pump failing which had in turn overheated the bearing, causing it to gain ¼” in endplay. Normally this type of failure would have led to catastrophic failure. Initially the engineers had installed coalescing filters on a portable oil dehydrator/purification machine but these had blocked very quickly. After initial installation they plugged within a day.
Additionally these filters could not be used for condition monitoring and cost $350 each.
Realising the Magnom™ technology could extend filter life and give condition monitoring the engineers installed the technology upstream of the conventional filters
After 3 days the engineers found that the Magnom™ had captured large amounts of contaminant and required cleaning yet no DP was measured across the coalescing filters.
Oil analysis showed that after 1 week of running, the Magnom™ had cleaned the fluid completely.
As a result of this success the plant engineers have subsequently used Magnom™ units to filter diesel fuel and on water lines to remove fine rust contaminant.
