Case Study: Gun Drilling Machine
Summary: Cleaned fine contaminant from coolant which was causing blockages, broken tools and significant downtime.
Application(s): Cutting Oils Coolants
Industry(s): Metalwork
Notes
Filtration in a precision gun drilling application was proving difficult for a U.S. based company. Despite an existing system incorporating 3 filtration points the company were still finding it difficult to remove the 10 Micron to less than one micron contaminants from the coolant.
This fine metallic contamination was causing blockages of coolant to spindle gun drills, resulting in broken tools and down time. If not removed this contamination causes wear on any component that it comes into contact with and compromises fluid life by acting as a catalyst to the oxidation process.
To remove this fine contaminant a Magnom™ Clear 10 was introduced as a final filtration point. Upon inspection the Magnom was found to contain high levels of fine ferrous contamination
The company believe the introduction of the Magnom™ technology will save thousands of dollars in down time and replacement tool expense, and will extend the coolant life.
As a result of the success of the Magnom™ on this line the customer has a further eight precision gun drilling machines and will be installing a Magnom™ Clear 10 on each machine
Benefits
- Reduced downtime
- Reduced tool replacements
- Extend coolant life
