Notes

Dai-Nippon Printing Company (D.N.P) based in Kyushu, Japan produce high quality printing solutions for packaging, vinyl and plastics. Magnom’s Japanese distributor Techno Support Ltd proposed to the team at D.N.P.  that they introduce the Magnom™ technology as a way of reducing consumable costs and improving process performance and quality.

D.N.P utilise a rotary gravure printing process within their plant. This process produces high quality results but the printing drum is extremely sensitive to abrasions and scratches. This then leads to poor quality printing and ultimately downtime and lost production.

D.N.P were finding that contamination was being introduced to the system via the gravure ink itself. This was then collecting at the doctor blade, (a device that removes the excess ink from the drum), and scratching the printing surface.

Techno Support suggested a Magnom™ Mini was installed into one of the ink lines to test the technology. The engineer in charge then monitored the systems performance.

To their great surprise upon inspection of the Magnom™ core it was found to contain a large amount of fine ferrous contaminant that would have, without the Magnom™ Mini, found its way through to the doctor blade where it would have damaged the print drum surface.

It was also found that the traditional barrier filters used to filter the ink needed replacing far less frequently, drastically reducing consumable costs. This cost reduction, in conjunction with the benefits in print quality experienced, due to the removal of fine ferrous contamination by the Magnom™, easily convinced the engineer of the benefits of the Magnom™ technology.

Magnom ™ Midi Units have subsequently been specified and installed to all 7 of the colour lines at this rotary gravure press.

Benefits

  • Prevented damage to print drum
  • Enhanced final print quality
  • Dramatically reduced conventional filter consumable costs
